DRC’s business units serve the K-12 and adult education sector, Federal and state governments, licensure board and associations, and commercial clients worldwide.

Summary: This position is responsible for editing, copyediting, and proofreading a variety of standardized test materials, technical reports, and other documents submitted for review. Contract editors sometimes work individually and sometimes work as part of a team composed of other full-time and contract editors. They oversee and complete editing assignments according to provided schedules, ensuring that deadlines are met and submitted materials are accurately edited at the editing level requested. Contract editors are also responsible for referencing the appropriate resources (e.g., The Chicago Manual of Style, Merriam-Webster Online, The Gregg Reference Manual, Encyclopedia Britannica) as necessary during editorial reviews.

Essential Position Responsibilities

  • Reviews documents for grammar, spelling, punctuation, usage, and/or style and format at the requested level of editing (e.g., substantive, technical/copyediting, proofreading)
  • Establishes and maintains a high-level working knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) and its application to the variety of materials submitted for review
  • Plans work according to established priorities and project schedules

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in English or literature, linguistics, language studies, or communications
  • Extensive familiarity with CMOS, 17th ed.—must pass a DRC-administered editing test covering CMOS
  • 3+ years of editing or copyediting experience
  • Knowledge and experience in editing a wide range of materials of varying complexities in a business or academic setting
  • Superior communication skills
  • High level of attention to detail
  • A demonstrated record of meeting deadlines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, Adobe Acrobat (i.e., PDF markups), and Google Workspace

Preferred Qualifications

· An advanced degree in English or literature, linguistics, language studies, or communications

· Teaching experience, curriculum development experience, or specialized skills in mathematics or science
