Compass Health is currently looking for an Designated Crisis Responder (DCR) Float for our MCOT/Emergency Services program in Bellingham! The DCR provides crisis intervention mental health services to persons of all ages experiencing acute behavioral health issues and when appropriate evaluates for an involuntary detention. These services will be provided primarily in community settings to individuals who are in crisis or for whom a crisis episode is deemed to be imminent. This position will also provide support and back-up to team members as needed.


Who you'll be working with:

The Mobile Crisis Outreach Team (MCOT) is a community-based outreach team with the ability to respond to and provide crisis services in the community (e.g., homes, schools, shelters). The Team serves adults, adolescents, and children who are experiencing a behavioral health (mental health and/or substance use) crisis regardless of their funding source. MCOT offers short term crisis intervention and prevention services utilizing strength-based, solution-focused, culturally competent, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented interventions.


What you will be performing

The DCR provides crisis intervention services to persons of all ages experiencing acute behavioral health issues (including both mental health and substance use issues), and when appropriate evaluates for an involuntary detention. These services will be provided primarily in community settings to individuals who are in crisis or for whom a crisis episode is deemed to be imminent. This position will also provide support and back-up to team members as needed. This is a full-time float position which will cover up to 38 hours per week of variable shifts in Whatcom as assigned. Days worked may vary week to week depending on the staffing needs of the teams. During weeks when no coverage is needed, this position will work on days as defined by the DCR Staffing Pattern, to provide additional coverage for the assigned team.

  • Complies with all accurate and appropriate charting, coding, and billing procedures as required by the regulatory organizations.
  • Documents delivery of services in the medical record. Completes all paperwork to agency standard and within required timelines.
  • Meets or exceeds service hour expectations and/or response time expectations established by the agency.
  • Stabilizes the crisis situation at the site of the consumer’s choosing whenever possible, utilizing a variety of intervention options, including referrals to both behavioral health and non-behavioral health services. Supports with the goal of utilizing the least restrictive interventions possible.
  • Provides evaluations for clients in acute crisis in various settings throughout the county.
  • Takes active measures to ensure client and community safety when less restrictive options are not reasonably expected to resolved the presenting crisis episode.

What you can expect from the role

  • Provides voluntary crisis intervention when appropriate.
  • Provides urgent appointments as needed for individuals who the Care Crisis Line have determined are not in need of immediate crisis intervention but would benefit from a next day appointment with a member of the crisis team.
  • Works closely with the inpatient units and emergency rooms.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled supervision and team meetings.
  • Remains compliant with required trainings and certifications.
  • Behaves in an ethical and professional manner consistent with agency policy, state law, and licensing entities if applicable.
  • Understands and practices safekeeping of client protected health information per Compass Health’s HIPAA and other agency policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates respect for diversity and a commitment to developing multicultural competency and sensitivity.

What you will bring with you:

  • MA/MS/MSW Degree in a Behavioral Science related field.
  • Current Washington State Licensure or equivalent in Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy, or Mental Health Counseling preferred.
  • Qualifies as a Mental Health Professional (MHP) as defined by WAC.
  • Experience in medical, mental health or social services field preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Evidence-Based Practices, or interest and ability to learn.
  • Individuals who do not already hold a license or associate license through the Washington State Department of Health must submit Agency Affiliated Counselor application upon hire and be approved by the DOH.
  • Proof of Hepatitis B vaccination within 10 days of hire.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License required including vehicle and appropriate insurance, if applicable.
  • Ability to attend the DCR Academy by the time of the first annual review required.
