POSITION: Finance Generalist


DEPARTMENT: Finance Department


LOCATION: Moss Point City Hall, 4320 McInnis Avenue, Moss Point, MS 39563


HOURS: 40 Hours per Week (M-F, 8:00am – 5:00pm)


SALARY RANGE: $25,000 - $34,000 Annual Salary *Based on Experience


DUTIES: Employees in this class perform a variety of clerical and bookkeeping tasks in accordance with well established procedures. Work includes the performance of sub-professional accounting duties which require a working knowledge of accounting principles and practices. Detailed instructions and close supervision are received at the beginning of work and on new assignments, but regular routine assignments may be performed independently, and initiative exercised as experience is gained. Work is subject to general supervision by the Comptroller and is usually reviewed for content, accuracy and adherence to established standards.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be eligible to work in the United States, possess and maintain a valid Mississippi driver’s license and be bondable.


MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two (2) year college or technical school and three (3) years related experience; or High School diploma or GED equivalent with five (5) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Must be proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Outlook

REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Mississippi driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the City’s insurance carrier.
  • Must be bondable.

FINANCE GENERALIST


SUMMARY:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Processes accounts payable, accounts receivable and other accounting functions as assigned through established procedures.
  • Review and process daily cash receipts/deposits.
  • Compute and record charges, refunds, cost of lost or damaged goods, freight charges, rentals, and similar items.
  • Code data for input to financial data processing system.
  • Perform data entry on computer system.
  • Prepare and process checks, account statements, reports, and other records and reviews for accuracy.
  • Reconcile reports/documents.
  • Assists Finance Support Specialist with fixed assets and inventory.
  • Review documentation to be sure that it meets state, federal or other requirements.
  • Process correspondence such as mailing checks with invoices or letters, filling out required forms that have to be sent with checks, W-9 forms, and any other correspondence required.
  • Compile, sort and file documents, such as purchase orders and checks, substantiating business transactions.
  • Assist with processing refunds or collection of funds and send correspondence for refunds or collections.
  • Assist Auditor’s as needed such as making copies, pulling documentation, filing documentation, and any duties that may be required.
  • Assist Administrative Clerk duties as needed.
  • Review computer printouts against ledgers and make corrections.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Comptroller.

  • Good organizational, decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to plan, direct and coordinate the work of subordinates.
  • Knowledge of English, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and arithmetic; and modern office practices, procedures, systems, and equipment.
  • Ability to meet and deal with people tactfully and courteously.
  • Ability to react to change productively and to handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • Must be proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Outlook;
  • Ability to understand written or oral instructions; read, analyze and interpret complex documents.
  • Must be able to present information effectively and efficiently in a group setting or one-on-one.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to concentrate, perform accurately and work under stress of deadlines.
  • Must be able to come to work promptly and regularly.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Mississippi vehicle operator’s license.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
