Tacoma Water is creating an eligibility list for Water Service Mechanic.

A Water Service Mechanic performs skilled journey-level work in the installation, maintenance, operation, and repair of specialized water supply, treatment, and distribution system equipment. They operate and maintain treatment facilities, reservoirs and standpipes, wells, pump stations, pressure-reducing valve stations, and large-diameter transmission pipelines. Water Service Mechanics also perform skilled carpentry, painting, plumbing, machine repair, fabrication, welding, calibration and maintenance of water quality analyzer equipment, and masonry duties as required. Work duties may entail working outdoors in all weather conditions. Working in confined spaces, on manlifts and elevated structures up to 120' is necessary. Tacoma Water utilizes SAP work management software, mechanics are required to work within SAP for time entry and to create corrective maintenance notifications.



QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Graduation from high school or equivalent AND
  • Washington State Water Distribution Manager certification level 2 (WDM2) OR completion of the City of Tacoma Water Apprenticeship Program.

Applicants who are enrolled in but have not completed Tacoma Water's Apprenticeship Program will be given conditional acceptance to compete in the examination process, but will not be certified, interviewed, set-up or promoted until proof of completion is provided.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid Washington Driver's License at time of application with maintenance thereafter.

Training, as required by the Process Safety Management Plan, will be required for some positions.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Position requires lifting up to 100 pounds, climbing, and pushing.

Outdoor environment, subject to adverse weather conditions, driving from site-to-site, and may be subject to noise and fumes from equipment operation.

Working in confined spaces.

Position requires heavy lifting, bending, climbing and pushing.

Employees in this position are exposed to potential traffic hazards.

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the civil service exam. We will have an online written exam and practical exam to establish the eligible list. In order to be invited to participate in the practical exam, applicants must pass the online written exam. Applicants must pass the exams to be placed on the eligible list for interview and hiring consideration. The online written exam is tentatively scheduled for the week of January 3 , 2023.

Appointment is subject to passing a background check. This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the City of Tacoma and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 483. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.
