Position Summary
The Tool and Die Maker manufactures, reworks and repairs dies, jigs, fixtures, gauges, templates, tools, equipment and machine components.
Position Duties and Responsibilities
1. Receive instructions, drawings, sketches and work orders from Production personnel/supervision, Maintenance and Engineering.
2. Interpret drawings and sketches. Plan and determine working procedure for tools and material requirements. Manufacture tools, jigs and fixtures needed to complete assigned tasks. Develop sketches of parts and perform layout as required. Calculate and determine dimensions and indices. Use data, shop formulas and reference material as required.
3. Select and grind tools for the job considering hardness, machinability, desired finish and other properties of parts to be machined.
4. Set up and operate all machine tools common to the trade. Adjust stops, feeds, speeds and indexing, tapering or threading attachments to perform all types of operations for which the machine is adapted. Machine and hand finish part to precision tolerances and required surface. Use precision measuring instruments. Create and use CNC programs as required.
5. Assemble, fit, align and adjust parts to required tolerances.
6. Train others in the use of tools and techniques.
7. Perform routine maintenance of equipment and tooling, including preventive maintenance and maintaining cleanliness of equipment and work area.
8. Follow all written and oral safety requirements. Thoroughly understands, and completely complies with, relevant OSHA safety standards, including the "TAG TO ZERO" program.
9. Support and participate in the organization's Continuous Improvement philosophy and SPC programs, as applicable, to maintain and improve quality standards.
10. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: A minimum of eight years tool & die making experience in the manufacturing industry. Highly skilled with plunge EDM and carbide draw die fabrication and polishing experience.
Knowledge: Knowledge of machine shop and tool room practices.
Knowledge of the properties for various materials, the principles of application as well as the operations of various types of tools, fixtures, dies, instruments and machinery.
Knowledge of all types of hand, power and pneumatic tools; machine shop tools and cutters; manual and CNC machine tools; mills; plunge EDM equipment; die finishing equipment and compounds; heat treating equipment; lathes; grinders; measurement tools; computers; data collection equipment; testing and diagnostic equipment; lifting equipment; etc.
Knowledge of hazardous and flammable materials, lubrications and coolants, cutting oils, grinding compounds and other processing materials, compressed and liquefied gases, repair kits, spare parts, raw stock material (e.g. metals, plastics, Teflon, nylon), service manuals and instructions, engineering drawings and sketches.

Mechanical skills to operate applicable machines, tools and equipment
Mathematic skills to calculate and determine dimensions, tapers, indices and formulas used in the industry
Computer skills to support CNC machining
Abilities: Operate applicable machines, tools and equipment.
Work in the manual or CNC mode if appropriate
Read, interpret and work with Engineering drawings and sketches, traveler instructions and procedures
Read precision instruments and machine settings
Judge machined product characteristics such as surface finish to ensure machining and polishing requirements have been achieved
Read, write, speak and comprehend the English language
Prepare sketches to keep drawing data up to date
Work without prints from old parts
Work with the U.S. standard and metric measurement systems
Operate a computer workstation and the related hardware and software

Abilities: Maintain mental concentration for entire shift to perform job duties
Feel, see and hear to troubleshoot and evaluate the condition, lifting equipment, quality and accuracy of fabricated components, assemblies, tooling, machinery and equipment.
See in order to write and read documents and computer screens
Hear changes in frequency of machinery to ensure proper operation and safety
Maintain hand-eye coordination sufficient to set-up and operate machine equipment, CNC or computer controller interfaces, keyboards and pads, tools and dies.
Obtain precision tolerances by hand manipulation of various hand, machine and inspection tools
Lift, hold and move 50 lbs. of material in and out of machines
Push product-laden carts weighing up to 2,000 lbs. from one operation to the next
Stand while performing duties during the majority of the work shift
Move around equipment in congested areas to perform duties of the job
Travel throughout the plant to perform job duties and responsibilities
Work under frequently changing priorities
Work under minimal supervision
Perform work in accordance with established safety procedures
Work effectively as a team member and act as a team leader
Provide and accept constructive criticism
Train and direct helpers or other employees as required
