Ferrandino & Son, Inc. is looking to add a Staff Sales Tax Accountant to their team for their corporate office in Farmingdale, NY! The qualified candidate will be responsible for ensuring sales and use tax compliance obligations are met while minimizing the company’s sales tax liabilities exposure. This position requires a working knowledge of multi-state sales and use tax principles; month-end close and reconciliations; strong organizational skills; effective collaboration and communication; and efficient execution as well as performing general accounting duties and account reconciliations to assist with month close on several entities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare/Review sales and use tax returns for multiple states, to comply with state and local regulations [currently using Avalara (AvaTax)]
• Responsible for timely filing of tax returns in all jurisdictions in which our companies operate
• Assist in managing sales & use tax audits and audit defense
• Primary liaison with our third-party technology solution (Avalara) to manage sales tax reporting and returns filing
• Monitor sales and use tax technical developments
• Prepare and review journal entries and perform account reconciliations, identify account variances, and determine corrective courses of action
• Review purchase invoices to determine taxability and prepare use tax accruals
• Review customers’ sales tax exemption certificates, based on the state requirements, and update our internal systems
• Maintain proper setups in Avalara for sales and purchase transactions
• Review and maintain proper tax mappings of services from our internal systems to Avalara
• Prepare support documents for requests from external auditors
• Research tax rules and regulations for various sales and purchase transactions and stay current with changes in tax law
• Communicate sales tax requirements to others within the organization, as necessary
• Review sales and purchase contracts for sales tax implications
• Month-end financial close, including reconciliation and analysis of general ledger accounts and assisting with the year-end audit process

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (Accounting preferred)
• 4-6 years of multi-state sales tax accounting experience
• Experience with Avalara (AvaTax) is a big plus, or similar tax management software
• Prioritize multiple tasks/projects, while also completing regular responsibilities, working effectively, independently and in a team environment
• Solid understanding of accounting principles and reconciliations
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams
• Research sales & use tax matters and make informed recommendations
• Knowledge of Microsoft Excel is required
• Experience with exemption, resale, capital improvement certificates
• Requires general accounting work experience and knowledge of GAAP
• MS Dynamics and SAGE Intacct experience a plus
