Overview of the Role

Under the general direction of the Director of Operations, transport students to and from school and ensure the safety of the student passengers in the school vehicle. Transport students on special event trips. Perform daily inspections of transportation equipment. Operate transportation equipment in a safe manner.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Operate transportation vehicle within prescribed routes in accordance with the time schedules.
  • Pick up and discharge students at designated stops.
  • Pick up and discharge deliveries at designed stops.
  • Escort and assist students on and off vehicles and across the street when necessary.
  • Transport students and teachers on field trips to various locations, planning necessary routes and stops as needed.
  • Maintain order and proper discipline of student passengers according to district policy.
  • Instruct students on safety regulations and policies related to passenger conduct.
  • Conduct safety and operation inspection of assigned vehicle daily, noting fuel and oil levels.
  • Evacuate vehicle in a safe and timely manner when necessary and conduct periodic drills for same as required by law.
  • Maintain cleanliness of vehicle to ensure safe operating conditions; sweeps and cleans vehicle interior as required.
  • Maintain accurate records, including student counts and route cards as required; complete all necessary reports upon request.
  • Report needed mechanical repair on vehicle when necessary; maintain mileage and other logs as required.
  • Attend driver-training programs to maintain current knowledge of California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code as they apply to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others of diverse backgrounds, experience, and personalities, and work with diverse school sites and conditions in a manner that achieves District goals.
  • Communicate effectively in English orally and in writing, and model communication skills using tact, patience, and courtesy to respond to the needs of team members and others.
  • Operate personal computer, related software, and other office equipment, and flexibly learn new applications and systems as needed.
  • Meet District standards of professional conduct as outlined in Board Policy.
  • EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
  • PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Frequently sits for extended periods; Walking, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, bending over, grasping, reaching overhead, pushing, pulling and moving, lifting and/or carrying 0-50 pounds to waist height; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communications.

License, Certification, Bonding, and/or Testing Requirements:

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
  • Tuberculosis Clearance
  • Valid California Driver’s License

Working Conditions:

  • ENVIRONMENT: Driving a vehicle. Indoors and outdoors workenvironment.
  • HAZARDS: Potential for contact with bodily fluids, blood-borne pathogens, and communicable diseases; Exposure to anti-social behavior; Driving a vehicle during adverse weather conditions.
