JOB ANNOUNCEMENT - We have an immediate opportunity for a President, Biosciences, reporting to the Chief Executive Officer of SRI International and serving as a member of SRI’s executive management team. This position will be based out of our Menlo Park, CA, Headquarters.

DIVISION DESCRIPTION:

SRI Biosciences, a division of SRI International, is leading the way in the field of biosciences. The Division tackles some of the most challenging problems in medicine, integrating basic biomedical research with drug and diagnostics discovery and preclinical and clinical development. SRI Biosciences consists of three sections: The Basic Science section conducts pre-clinical and clinical investigations supported by the NIH, including human and animal magnetic resonance imaging and sleep physiology research. The Applied Science section develops and licenses platform technologies and therapeutics in several major areas including cancer, infectious disease and neurodegenerative disease. The Translational Development section functions as a full-service preclinical and clinical contract research organization (CRO).

The division is focused on novel platforms and programs in a variety of therapeutic areas targeting high unmet medical needs. Past successes include discovery of the cancer drugs FOLOTYN® and TARGETRIN® for T-cell lymphoma, the anti-malarial halofantrine, a new oral formulation of Naloxone, and the FOX-3 Molecular Guidance System for drug delivery. The Division collaborates with a broad range of partners from small and virtual biotechnology companies to top 10 pharmaceutical companies and other leading industry partners.

In addition to developing novel drug discovery and development platforms, SRI Biosciences performs research and provides pre-clinical services that take therapeutic candidates from discovery to the clinic. The Biosciences Division has worked with our partners to advance more than 195 drugs to clinical trials, and over 20 have reached the market. SRI has numerous partnership models, enabling flexibility in its research and development collaborations with industry and academic partners. SRI Biosciences is the largest provider of preclinical services to the National Institutes of Health.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The President will provide the overall management, strategic direction, and guide the growth and financial success of the division through the establishment of short and long-range strategies, plans, and objectives to ensure their achievement.

The person in this position will lead strategic planning, business development and research operations, for a multidisciplinary team of 250 employees (over 80 with one or more Ph.Ds.) across three sites: Menlo Park, CA; Plymouth, MI; and Harrisonburg, VA. Top -and bottom-line responsibility for $75M+ annual operating budget. Oversee groups engaged in use-inspired basic research, applied translational research and development and provision of contract research services.

Responsibilities:
This person will be responsible for leading and overseeing all aspects of the Biosciences division, including:

Vision and strategy
  • Articulate a compelling vision and mission that fosters world changing innovation and inspires success.
  • Leverage the breadth of SRI capabilities to create and execute a strategy for innovation and growth that is aligned with SRI’s overall strategy.
  • Establish short and long-range organizational objectives, plans and budgets, and drive financial performance and accountability.
  • Build partnerships with academic and industrial organizations in SRI’s innovation ecosystem.

Operations
  • Oversee all operational aspects of division to support growth balanced with efficiency.
  • Manage the direction and growth of the current range of programs, e.g., negotiating major license deals with pharma companies. Work to strengthen business opportunities, identify gaps or areas where new programs should be developed, and prioritize investments.
  • Build and maintain strategic client and partner relationships to foster growth.

Leadership
  • Work with CEO and executive team on setting strategic direction, guidance and company-wide policies, and lead division in adoption.
  • As a member of the Senior Executive Team for SRI, assist in allocation and oversight of internal research and development resources.
  • As a member of SRI’s Commercialization Board, evaluate venture and licensing possibilities and Executives in Residence as possible spinout CEO’s.
  • Nurture a culture of collaboration and communication both within the Division and across SRI broadly.
    Develop, manage, and mentor a strong and well-integrated divisional senior leadership team.
  • Maintain oversight responsibility for recruiting and developing a strong senior technical team and providing development opportunities for early career researchers.

Public Presence
  • Be an articulate, outgoing and motivating spokesperson for Biosciences and SRI overall.
  • Serve as an industry expert and thought leader in external events and media opportunities.
  • Represent SRI in the external scientific community through involvement in leading professional societies and consortia.
Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or M.D. in Chemistry, Biology or Health Sciences discipline or a related field.
  • 15 years of experience in R&D focused on areas such as drug discovery and development, medical devices and diagnostics, biotechnology, and/or computational biology. Ideal candidate will have a mix of academic and industrial experience.
  • Experience in biotech / pharmaceutical industry highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated record of accomplishment of applying scientific knowledge to design and execute a successful research strategy.
  • Supervisory and research team leadership experience.
  • Experience in leading multidisciplinary scientific teams and cross-functional management.
  • Record of collaborative partnerships with commercial, government, and/or external academic laboratories.
  • Extensive evidence of scientific excellence via a peer-reviewed publication record, patents, or other relevant successes.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Must be able to obtain or maintain a Top-Secret clearance.
  • Familiarity with logistics of federally funded contract and/or grant programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple research locations.
