Position: Porter

Reports To: Supervisor / Program Manager or designee.

Licenses or Certificates: Valid Driver’s License, OSHA 30 Hour, First Aide/CPR; Nonviolent Behavioral Intervention Certification.

Software: Email, Share Point, Microsoft Office, others as needed/required.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Porter is responsible for the loading, offloading, storage of supplies needed for the daily care and supervision of Noncitizens/detainees in U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) custody. The Porter will ensure the distribution of water, snacks, and ice in appropriately stored refrigerator trailer. The Porter is also responsible for facilitating a variety of services to include maintaining a safe working environment and encouraging adherence to safety rules and health guidelines.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Must adhere to the Prison Rape Elimination Act and report any incidents or situations deemed as inappropriate conduct according to policies and procedures including the completion of a comprehensive report.
  • Will serve as a member of the Support Staff to assist in facilitating operational needs.
  • Must maintain or obtain a Forklift operator license within specific timeframe if approved.
  • Will conduct detainee personal property management to include Tagging, bagging, sealing, storing, and retrieval of their personal belongings.
  • Will conduct meal preparation to include heating meals, receiving, distribute, filling water jugs, and distributing cups/utensils to detainees.
  • Will warehouse an inventory of supplies by receiving and/or distributing items such as blankets, clothes, hygiene products, etc.
  • Will need to pack and relocate items/supplies needed by detainees and deliver to stations/ports as needed.
  • Will conduct pharmaceutical runs and supply runs as needed. Will pick up prescriptions in a timely manner to ensure adherence with physician’s orders and pick up pre-purchased items such as food and other supplies from vendors.
  • Will assist with the regular maintenance and housekeeping of the facility grounds (inside and outside) such as picking up trash, sweeping, shred documents, and cleaning equipment where food items are kept ensuring adherence with health code standards.
  • May be assigned to operating access doors and answering phone calls as needed.
  • May perform other duties as assigned or requested to support the safety, care, and supervision of detainees.

STANDARD REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older to work directly with detainees.
  • Must maintain any licensures/certifications during employment and/or obtain within required timeframes, if approved.
  • Ensure completion of On-the-Job Training requirements.
  • Meets dress code/uniform standards; appearance is neat and clean.
  • Complete any training requirements including CPR/First Aid.
  • Maintains dependable attendance and ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • May assist in the safe evacuation of detainees if needed.
  • May need to respond to emergency situations to ensure the safety and security of detainees.
  • Wear an ID badge while on company property or job sites.
  • Recognize the signs of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and provocative behavior. Follow reporting requirements for relevant federal contract requirements and document adhering to timeframes.
  • Must maintain confidentiality in all program areas including any information regarding detainees.
  • Maintain confidentiality of health care records and information in keeping with HIPAA and Protected Health Information (PHI) requirements.
  • Maintain professional conduct and ensure appropriate respectful interactions during any contact with detainees, program staff and CBP officers/representatives.
  • Enforces safety and security standards for detainees, staff, and visitors.
  • Clear MVR Check.
  • Clear Background Check.
  • Clear drug testing results.
  • Clear Tuberculosis results.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • GED/High School Diploma required, with 1 year experience working in a 24/7 operation, warehouse, or other similar environment preferred. Associates Degree in relevant field of study may be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Experienced forklift driver preferred.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and Food Handlers regulations preferred.
  • Demonstrates integrity, both in words and actions, and encourages ethical behavior and decision making.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office is preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Porter will work in-person on-site at the assigned facility.
  • Shifts will include an 8-hour period in the time zone where the facility is located, working 5-days a week within a 7-day work week.
  • The work week may not consist of a traditional Monday through Friday work schedule and working holidays is required.
  • Work is conducted in a 24-hour facility setting where the primary language of detainees is Spanish.
  • Noise levels will vary indoors and outdoors.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid certification and Forklift operator license.
  • Work environment may include working in offices, either indoors or outdoors.
  • Position requires a great deal of standing, walking, stooping, squatting, kneeling and heavy lifting. Can also involve sitting for extended periods to ensure that documentation is entered timely.
