Science Systems and Applications Inc. (SSAI) is seeking candidates for a Mechanical Engineer to support NASA in the development of electronics and optics/photonics enclosures, fixtures, and other spaceflight hardware. The successful applicant will use design, assembly, and test this spaceflight hardware. The candidate must be able to collaborate with a team comprised of diverse engineering disciplines.

  • The candidate will provide drafting, assembly, and test support based on NASA provided designs. Work will include updating GSE hardware designs, ETU designs and Flight designs
  • Develop 2D and 3D models of LIDAR system components using Autodesk, Solid Edge, or similar CAD programs
  • Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and other stakeholders to meet project deadlines
  • Work independently to generate CAD products, assemble hardware, and test hardware
  • Solicit inputs from engineers/technicians and/or take measurements of system components to be used in CAD model development


Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. and 3+ years of experience in Mechanical Engineering, to include CAD modelling, or M.S. and 1+ years of experience in Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience with Autodesk suite of programs, Solid Edge, or other CAD programs. Experience with collaborating with teams of engineers and other technical specialists to develop detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with NASA engineering processes and practices
  • Familiarity with spaceflight hardware design and fabrication. Hands on experience with spaceflight hardware is desired
  • Experience with developing technical drawings to be used for component manufacture and assembly Experience developing 3D models of aerospace components or similar hardware
  • Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, CAD, Media Arts and Design, or similar
  • Experience with developing exploded views, analysis of dimensional data, calculating volumes, and accounting for tolerancing values

Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
