Position Announcement: Librarian for Human & Organizational Development, Peabody Library
Vanderbilt University and the Vanderbilt Libraries are in an exciting time of transformation. With new leadership at the Chancellor, Provost and University Librarian levels, the libraries are re-envisioning the future of library services at Vanderbilt. Through radical collaboration we seek to deepen student and faculty engagement with the libraries, equip students for life-long information proficiency, increase faculty research impact, create more opportunities for interdisciplinary experimentation, and optimize access to collections and resources, including marginalized and hidden histories and cultures.

The Peabody Library is one of nine campus libraries within the Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries. The library’s staff is made up of a library director, subject librarians, and support staff that provide outreach and support for Vanderbilt faculty, students, and university staff in the areas of research and teaching. Peabody Library functions as a distinct operational facility, positioned within the larger structure of the Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries system.
Peabody Library’s primary user base is Peabody College. The librarians focus on delivering services to the departments within the college: the Department of Leadership, Policy, and Organizations, the Department of Psychology and Human Development, the Department of Special Education, and the Department of Teaching & Learning. They visit faculty and students in their offices and classrooms providing instruction and consultations that support research and coursework for undergraduates and graduates. The librarians work closely as a team, planning and delivering services to their constituents and making collections decisions together. Support staff manage the day-to-day operations of the library facility and assist with library outreach to our service community.
What does the subject discipline of Human & Organizational Development (HOD) Department encompass?
Peabody College’s School of Human & Organizational Development (HOD) major prepares students to address complex social problems in organizations and communities. Based in psychology and interdisciplinary in nature, the HOD curriculum challenges students to view human problems and their solutions as embedded in broader social ecological systems. HOD coursework draws on a range of disciplinary perspectives (e.g., psychology, organizational studies, sociology, political science, anthropology, geography, economics, social entrepreneurship), and explores societal issues across distinct levels of analysis (e.g., individual, group, organization, community, policy, international). The majority of HOD’s student population are undergraduates.
The HOD librarian supports undergraduate/graduate students and faculty in all instructional modalities through reference and research consultation. This position works with faculty, program leads and HOD staff in identifying and creating learning objects, building scaffolded instruction and developing appropriate learning assessments. This position also works with faculty and the collection development librarian in developing collections and discipline resources.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with team members to develop and implement a service model for the Human & Organizational Development Program, as well as Peabody College that will result in deep library engagement.
- Design and deliver an embedded undergraduate instruction and information literacy program based on the new domains in the HOD program.
- Provide r esearch instruction for graduate students.
- Actively engage with faculty and students.
- Provide innovative consultation services drawing on student engagement best practices.
- Develop programs and offerings to provide expert research support at all stages of the research life cycle.
- Contribute to collections strategies that are sustainable and responsive to user needs.
- Represent the library locally, regionally, and nationally.
- A ctively contribute to the library science profession.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Relationships :
This position does not have supervisory responsibility. This position reports administratively and functionally to the Director of Peabody Library.
Qualifications
- Master of Library and Information Science is required.
- An additional degree in a social science discipline, like psychology, is preferred.
- 2-5 years’ experience in an academic research library.
- A demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate students effectively.
- Strong presentation, public speaking, and networking skills.
- The ability to evaluate and assess instruction and outreach.
- Awareness of trends, diverse voices, and resources in the social sciences, especially education, leadership, and psychology.
- Knowledge and or interest in using emerging technologies to enhance the delivery of information services.
- Communication, social media, and multimedia skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively on teams.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced and changing environment.
- Active in professional organizations.
