NGI is engaged in challenging offshore assignments both locally and globally. NGI USA consists of a highly skilled team of engineers, geoscientists, and geotechnical laboratory specialists, working on full-field geohazard assessments, soil characterization and laboratory testing, foundation design for offshore wind turbines, fixed platforms and subsea structures, mooring anchor designs for floating facilities, and pipe/riser/cable-soil interaction. We are looking for a Laboratory Technologist with technical, mechanical, or electronic background to join our Advanced Testing team in Houston. Do you have an interest in hands-on environments? Responsibilities:

  • Assemble, program, and maintain test control equipment in the lab.
  • Design new control and data logging devices as needed for lab testing equipment.
  • Assist with specialized scale model testing projects as needed.
  • Write computer programs for controlling advanced tests and logging test data.
  • Prepare, update, and maintain EXCEL spreadsheets used for processing lab data.
  • Lab equipment maintenance.
  • Laboratory test reporting and database management.
  • Follow standard operating procedures and work instructions of various equipment.
  • Apply analytical methods and characterization techniques.
  • Selection and use of precision measurement tools for quality assurance of test specimens of various geometries.
  • Specimen extraction, preparation and measurement.
  • Ability to perform advanced lab tests using customized control systems and assist with testing as volume requires.
  • Develop understanding and awareness of project-related risks.
  • Other duties related to operation of the lab as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience:


  • BS Degree in Engineering Technology, or equivalent.
  • Proven advanced technical understanding and competence in mathematics, mechanical systems, and electronics.
  • Software competency:
    • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft OFFICE (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required.
    • Experience with Python or similar programming required.
    • Experience with AutoCAD or similar experience required.
  • Knowledge/experience with 3D printing equipment and processes is preferred.
  • Through internal hands-on training, must develop a well-rounded knowledge of our lab testing procedures and ASTM Standards followed in our lab.
  • Self-motivated while working toward meeting deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and basic problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Team player with a high level of initiative, professional integrity, persistence, dependability, flexibility with priority changes, proactive and solution-oriented approach, and enthusiasm and eagerness to learn, supported with strong communication skills.

The advanced testing group is sometimes involved with research projects or scale model testing programs that require non-standard tests on soil. The Laboratory Technologist will assist in these programs, as needed.


Additional information:

The Laboratory Technologist will show competency to develop a well-rounded knowledge of electrical and electronic equipment, which will be required to specify, procure, setup, and calibrate new equipment for special projects.


Persons filling this position will perform a variety of duties related to the testing of soil samples for engineering properties. Training will be provided on basic index tests performed in the lab, as well as advanced tests that use electronic control systems.


This position will require occasional lifting of objects weighing as much as 75 lbs. (with appropriate safety training). Many lab tests will require moving or lifting core samples weighing as much as 50 lbs. each on a repetitive basis.
