JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) at Penn State Harrisburg seeks an Instructional Designer (ID) to collaborate with faculty to design and develop in-person, hybrid, and online courses, develop instructional materials, and create other teaching/learning resources. This position requires an on-campus presence within a hybrid flexible work arrangement.

The Instructional Designer (ID) in The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) serves as a lead project manager working collaboratively with faculty and the course development team to design and develop in-person, hybrid, and online credit courses, develop instructional materials, and create other teaching/learning resources, with an emphasis on the integration of technologies, and with a solid understanding of instructional design theory. The ID will use LMS systems, technologies, effective instructional design practices, and communication strategies to meet the objectives of the tasks and projects.

J ob Responsibilities:

  • Understanding and familiarity with various educational technologies and integration of such technologies as part of effective pedagogy in an inclusive and continuous learning environment.

  • Supports faculty in making connections between instruction and integration of technology in a collaborative and collegial environment, including the development of appropriate strategies for implementing instructional technology across a broad and diverse range of academic programs and initiatives.

  • Strong listening, collaboration, and problem-solving skills are needed to provide one-to-one support to faculty.

  • Self-direct tasks and projects, with minimal supervision.

  • Responsible for project management of multiple courses, including management of scope, objectives development and alignment with assessments and content, timeline maintenance with applicable faculty, resource management, quality assurance, accessibility optimization, project documentation and reports, and management of content flow.

  • Promotes a culture that is conducive to effective relationships among diverse faculty and staff and ensures safe practices and environmental consciousness are exhibited in decisions.

  • Interprets and communicates information, ideas, and instructions clearly, accurately, and persuasively both verbally and in writing including materials intended for distribution.

  • Incorporates new facts and ideas into group processes and applies creative thinking to develop new solutions.

Tasks include but are not limited to :

  • Lead projects related to the learning of technologies development.

  • Provide consultation to faculty and staff in the design and structure of instructional solutions for inclusive, engaging, and collaborative learning, including individual and group consultations related to course design, redesign, and development to ensure instructional integrity of course development projects through a method of systematic design and clear course standards and objectives, including outcomes assessment.

  • Collaborates with faculty, fellow team members, and information/instructional technology staff to resolve issues related to technology use in teaching, including application assessment, pedagogy, deployment methodologies, and integration strategies, among other strategies, and consults with other instructional designers to develop solutions for academic programs, departments, and similar units.

  • Assist with curriculum development, including coordination with the course development team and management of workflow and communication among team members.

  • Define, implement, and coordinate projects and related research with faculty, and disseminate results and findings through reports, publications, and presentations, as appropriate, including the presentation of research and effective practices through workshops, conferences, consultations, and website resources.

  • Create repositories with resources related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, including accessibility.

  • Interface with vendors to evaluate technology-based instructional programs for incorporation into the curriculum.

  • Act as liaison with university organizations, other campuses, committees, and task forces that promote instructional design, learning theory, and technological innovations, including leading collaborative campus-wide events focusing on technological and pedagogical concepts and practices.

  • Design and conduct training workshops in instructional design and pedagogical strategies for faculty.

  • Coordinate activities related to New Faculty and Adjunct Faculty Orientation.

  • May write grant applications for financial support of redesign activities and programs to optimize new learning environments.

  • Provide mentoring to other staff.

Typical Education & Experience:

  • 4+ years of related experience.

  • Master’s Degree or higher.

  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience .

  • Working knowledge of Canvas or similar LMS is required.

  • Demonstrated collaboration and problem-solving skills required.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective professional relationships required.

  • Strong background in the integration of educational technology is a plus, including knowledge of and experience with immersive experiences / virtual reality.

  • Background and experience with supporting accessibility and accommodations resources preferred.

  • Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning is preferred.
