Excet, Inc. is in search of a Formulation Chemist who will work as a member of the technical team performing and leading research, development and testing in the areas of marine corrosion, marine engineering, materials, electrochemistry, coatings and environmental effects as related to the Navy surface ships, submarines, marine structures, aircraft and shore facilities. Candidates must be able to work with cross-functional groups involving government and industry partners to develop, test, manufacture and transition products or technologies to practical fleet applications and solutions. The position is full time in either Key West, FL or Washington, DC.
Specific Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Will be expected to conceive and synthesize new small molecules and polymers for use in state-of-the-art material (e.g., coatings, composites) technologies. The candidate will have an understanding of molecule structure/property relationships, functional group stability, polymer backbone stability, and kinetics of functional group reactivity.
• This position requires experience in molecule synthesis, purification, and characterization, in addition to experience with determining the thermal, mechanical, and surface properties of thermosetting and thermoplastic networks.
• The successful candidate will be required to report laboratory results in a written format, which include research highlights, formal reports, and articles for peer-review publication in professional journals.
• The candidate is also required to communicate verbally in the form of poster and oral presentations at technical conferences, scientific meetings, and workshops where government, academic, and industrial researchers are present.
• Additionally, the candidate shall have, or develop, an understanding of sponsor relationships to aid with developing research programs.

Required *Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or related disciplines; postdoctoral or industrial experience performing multi-step small molecule and polymer synthesis preferred
• Experience in the development of paint systems beyond benchtop formulation
• Experience conducting multiple types of reactions (e.g., oxidation, reduction, hydrosilylation, nucleophilic substitution, reductive amination, hydroboration, esterification, functional group protection and removal, alkylation)
• Experience with molecule purification techniques (e.g., chromatography, distillation, extraction, recrystallization)
• Experience with operating various analytical instruments (e.g., 1H and 13C NMR, DSC, DMA, TGA, FT-IR, HR-MS, UV-Vis, LC-MS, GPC) and interpreting results to determine molecule and material properties
• Due to contractual security requirements, only candidates that can obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance will be considered
• Must assist with proposal development and writing of peer-review manuscripts
• Must be highly creative and a self-motivated, and able to work independently
• Must be comfortable with handling multiple projects and being a team member

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience with degradable networks and networks possessing dynamic linkages
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Strong interpersonal skills and be comfortable interacting with technical and non-technical staff
• Effectively use SciFinder, Web of Science, and other research databases to identify relevant scientific literature
• The position will require growth beyond the above-mentioned work to include development of Navy-specific material systems with unique multi-functional attributes in order to provide life-cycle enhancements and reduced maintenance costs.
