General Information
The primary responsibilities of the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations are the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of private gifts from foundations and corporations in support of university priorities. Projects will require close working relationships with colleagues in the Office of Development and the Division of University Advancement, as well as with faculty, administrators, and other university officers; an understanding of the program goals and objectives of JMU’s academic and administrative units and of the university as a whole; and an understanding of the funding interests and requirements of the corporate and foundation communities.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Raise an annually established goal for corporate and foundation contributions.
  • Identify and manage a portfolio of corporations and private foundations that have both the interest and inclination to support various strategic initiatives at James Madison University.
  • Manage a staff of one associate/assistant director, an administrative support staff member and student workers.
  • Assume a level of calling activity commensurate with the expectations and requirements of the position, writing detailed and timely reports on each contact.
  • Develop and implement strategies to build corporate and foundation interest, involvement and support of the university and its academic and administrative units.
  • Work closely with colleagues in the Office of Development and the Division of University Advancement to manage the corporate and foundation program in a way that ensures the full resources of the office, division and university are brought to bear on any given situation.
  • Work with the college deans and other officers of the university in the planning and implementation of long term strategic fundraising initiatives for their units.
  • Coordinate, write and submit funding proposals, and otherwise solicit gifts in support of university priorities.
  • Ensure that corporate and foundation gifts and awards are properly acknowledged, accounted for and stewarded.
  • Work with Office of Advancement Information Services to develop systems to effectively manage individual corporate and foundation prospects as well as the corporate/foundation database as a whole.
  • Inform faculty and administration regarding potential prospects and changes in corporate partners.
  • Advise faculty on the feasibility of obtaining private gift support, and assist faculty in developing funding proposals and identifying corporations and foundations that may support their needs.
  • Work with the Office of Annual Giving staff to design and implement a corporate annual fund.
  • Assume responsibilities as a major gifts officer or annual fund calling officer, as circumstances require.
  • Coordinate efforts with the Office of Sponsored Programs, and Research and Scholarship to help maximize funding opportunities for both programs.
  • Design and implement an annual fundraising plan, and provide an annual report assessing the plan’s effectiveness.
  • Manage the Madison Trust program including faculty project recruitment, vetting process of projects, donor recruitment, event day management and program follow-up.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President for Development.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Minimum of five years corporate and foundation development experience or equivalent experience in a related field.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Experience in team building, staff supervision and motivation and management.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and work effectively with staff, administrators, faculty, alumni, and the members of boards and advisory groups.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a member of a larger team.
  • Ability to work effectively under deadline, set and maintain priorities, and manage a variety of projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to relate to diverse constituencies.
  • High comfort level with technology.
  • Willingness to travel extensively and to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
Preferred:
  • Bachelor’s degree required/master’s degree.
  • Personnel management experience.
  • Demonstrated success as a proposal writer in higher education in higher education.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
